Vinted scams: warning signs, how to report them and where buyer protection stops in the US
The one rule that stops most Vinted scams is to keep everything inside Vinted: chat in the app, pay with the Buy now button and never follow a link or QR code that takes you elsewhere. Vinted's own pages say a payment made outside its system is not protected and that it cannot offer support for it. This guide lists the warning signs Vinted describes, how to report them in the US and where buyer protection ends.

The one rule: stay inside Vinted
Vinted's Buying safely page (checked October 21, 2026) gives three habits: use the Ask seller button and do not move the conversation outside Vinted's system, check the seller's profile and reviews, and buy through the Buy now button. It adds that if you pay outside Vinted's system your purchase is not protected and Vinted cannot offer you support.
The Community Standards page says the same: keep conversations on Vinted, share no personal or financial details in messages, and know that buying outside the secure payment system, for example by direct bank transfer, leaves the purchase unprotected. A scam usually needs you to leave the app, open something or hurry.
What are the common Vinted scam warning signs?
| Warning sign | What Vinted's pages say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Asked to pay or chat outside Vinted | Scammers might lead you away to get your contact details or make you enter credentials on a fake website. | Decline, keep to Buy now and Ask seller, report the member. |
| Pressure to act quickly | Scammers use urgent language, time limits and threats, such as saying your account will be blocked or an order canceled. | Stop. You do not have to leave Vinted to confirm a payment or receive an order. |
| A link, email address or QR code in a message | A real in-app example asked members to send information to an email, open a link or scan a QR code. | Do not open or scan it. Report the message. |
| An email or text that looks like Vinted | Phishing can arrive as messages, texts, emails and QR code attachments. Vinted emails come from an address ending @vinted.com, and official updates come from the Vinted account with a badge. | Check the sender. Forward emails to phishing@vinted.com. |
| A branded item that looks fake | Counterfeits are prohibited. Buy branded items only if the seller can reasonably prove authenticity. | Ask for proof first, and report the listing. |

Emails, texts and QR codes that pretend to be Vinted or a carrier
Vinted defines phishing as a message that tricks you into revealing personal data or installing malware, and says scammers often impersonate Vinted with realistic messages and websites. Its page shows real examples: in-app messages asking you to email someone, open a link or scan a QR code, a fake email asking you to open a link to confirm a sale, and fake Vinted websites offering support.
Fake verification links work because Vinted does sometimes ask for checks: its Help Center describes purchase verification, 2-step verification codes and ID checks by its payment provider, and says purchase verification arrives as a message with a secure link. So we cannot say every link is fake: check the request in your Vinted inbox and contact Vinted through the app before you send a document.
Phone calls are not on Vinted's list of phishing methods. In our reading, an unexpected caller claiming to be Vinted deserves suspicion: hang up and contact Vinted through the app. A "Vinted AI scam" is not a separate scam on the pages we read, only messages made to look realistic, so judge behavior and not grammar.
Counterfeit items and misleading listings
Vinted says only authentic items can be sold, that counterfeits are strictly prohibited even when the seller admits the item is a copy, and that it removes such a listing and suspends the account. The report page names listings with intentionally misleading photos, price, condition or size, and Vinted's commercial selling page says sellers must give accurate photos of the actual item.
If a Buy now order arrives fake or significantly not as described, press I have an issue within 2 calendar days and add photos of the item, the problem and the outer and inner packaging.
Vinted's Item Verification page lists the countries where the service is available, and the United States is not on that list when we checked.
Account takeover: the signs and the first steps
Vinted's page on hacked accounts lists the signs: personal details changed without you, login details that stop working, password reset emails or phone codes you did not request, unexplained transactions or withdrawal changes, unexpected listing changes, and chats with members you do not remember. If you can still log in, press Contact us, check in Settings, Security that your email is unchanged, log out of unknown devices, change your password and turn on 2-step verification..
How to report a scam
- A message: open the chat, tap the i symbol in the top-right corner, choose Report and give the reason, such as scamming or phishing.
- A listing or profile: use the three-dot menu, then Report.
- A phishing email: forward it to phishing@vinted.com or press Contact us, with screenshots, the username or profile link and the sender's details.
If you shared details or lost money, Vinted's page adds: freeze affected bank accounts or cards, update passwords and turn on multi-factor authentication, ask your bank whether the payment can be reversed, and contact your local police if money was taken from your account.
In the US, report scams to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The site says it cannot resolve your individual report but uses reports to investigate and bring cases against fraud and scams.
Where Vinted buyer protection stops
Buyer protection is the refund policy for Buy now orders that are lost, damaged or significantly not as described, reported within 2 calendar days (details in Vinted fees and Buyer Protection explained). It does not cover payments made outside Vinted, an item you simply dislike, or an order you accepted or let lapse. Vinted's phishing page also says it cannot be held responsible for losses resulting from scams or phishing attempts.
Contact Vinted before you ask your bank for a chargeback: its chargeback page says opening a dispute outside Vinted first may lead to your account being restricted.
If you sell on Vinted too
Vinted's help page on earnings says that when a buyer uses Buy now, Vinted never asks you for your email address, phone number or other personal information during the sale. A message asking you to open a link to confirm a sale matches the fake email example on Vinted's phishing page.
Where VTD BOT fits, and where it does not
VTD BOT is an alert tool, not a scam filter. You save searches (keywords, brand, size, condition, price ceiling, excluded words) and it alerts you to matching listings with an estimated value and the real cost after the Vinted fee and shipping. It checks Vinted at regular intervals, not continuously, and it cannot tell you whether a seller is honest or an item is genuine.
VTD BOT never asks for your Vinted password or login, never logs in, buys or messages sellers, and will never send you a link asking you to log in to Vinted. A message that claims to be from VTD BOT and asks for that is not from us. There is no free plan: Starter is $9 a month, Plus $29 and Pro $39 (see the pricing and features). On bots and your account, read Is a Vinted bot allowed? and Vinted bot alerts.
